What is Linux?
Linux is a operating system. In 1991 Linus torvalds launch a kernel for open source software that was known as Linux kernel. Open source
means that code is open and it can be modify. So we can say that Linux is a
kernel not a fully operating system.
Linux works just like that a windows operating system or a mac
operating. Linux is a GUI version of UNIX. Linux has a large of functions like
multi-user, multitasking, multiprocessor etc. Linux can run on many platforms.
Linux has some paid versions and some
paid versions. Linux is used for many computing platform like PCs and
supercomputer.
History of Linux:-
In 80’s, Microsoft’s DOS was dominated operating system for
PC. After sometime APPLE MAC came in
the market . Apple MAC was better, but it was expensive. After sometime UNIX
came in the market. UNIX was much
better, but much and more expensive operating system. It was only for mini
computer for commercial applications. In 1984 by Rechard Stallman started a project that is known as GNU. GNU is a changed name, but GNU is not UNIX. Aim
of the GNU project is that develop a operating system like UNIX which is free
for coping and modification. In 1991, Stallman
built the first GNU C compiler. After sometime Andrew Tanenbaum developed a simplified version of UNIX that was
known as MINIX. MINIX was run on PC.
But MINIX was only use for students. It had no intention for commercial use. In sep 1991, Linus Torvalds, who a
second year student of computer science in University of Helsinki, developed
the preliminary kernel of Linux, known as Linux
version 0.0.1 .
